Canada, Denmark win big in opening qualifying matchups

Evander Kane added two goals and an assist, while Jordan Eberle had a goal and three assists for Canada, which finished preliminary round play with a 2-0-0-1 record to move into the qualifying stage. Rich Peverley and Ray Whitney each had a goal and two assists in the dominant victory.

Chris Mason stopped 11-of-12 shots, and Chad Johnson made seven saves for Canada, which next plays Sweden on Sunday.

Jonas Holos had the lone goal for Norway, which also finished 2-0-0-1 in preliminary play. Ruben Smith had 23 saves, while Andrew Lysenstoen stopped nine more shots for the Norwegians, who play Latvia on Sunday.

In the Group E qualifying opener, Peter Regin notched a goal and two assists in Denmark's 6-0 win over Slovakia. Morten Green and Morten Madsen each had a goal and an assist, while Patrick Galbraith stopped all 26 shots he faced in the victory.

The Danes, who finished 1-1-0-1 in preliminary play, next play Russia on Sunday.

Andrej Sekera and Vladimir Dravecky each notched a team-high six shots for Slovakia, which went 2-0-0-1 in the preliminary round. Peter Budaj yielded goals on each of the three shots he faced before being pulled just 4:40 into the contest and Rastislav Stana turned aside 28-of-31 shots in relief.

Slovakia plays Finland on Monday.

The 2009 AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year odds have been released and Denver Broncos' running back Knowshon Moreno has been made the opening favorite.

Moreno was selected in the first round of April's NFL draft and is expected to carry the rushing load for the Broncos this season. And with Jay Cutler now in Chicago, Moreno might be expected to be Denver's entire offense.

Green enters a crowded backfield in New York, but considering both Thomas Jones and Leon Washington are unhappy about their contract situations and might holdout, the former Iowa product could become the Jets' primary back.

Everyone was shocked when Al Davis took Heyward-Bey with the eighth overall pick in April's draft, but the kid has a tremendous amount of talent and if quarterback JaMarcus Russell takes the next step this year, the former Maryland product could blossom. Plus, Heyward-Bey will be looking to prove the people wrong who said Oakland should have taken Michael Crabtree with the No. 8 pick.
